Burdock is a biennial weed that can quickly take over garden beds, fence lines, meadows, and natural areas if left unmanaged. Burdock is easily recognizable due to its large, heart-shaped leaves, hollow stems, and round, hooked seed burrs that cling to clothing and fur. Although this weed used to be used in herbal medicine applications, burdock can spread aggressively, crowding out native plants and even residential gardens. Furthermore, this weed forms deep roots, making it incredibly difficult to remove by hand.
Burdock completes its life cycle over a two-year period. In its first year, burdock grows as a rosette close to the ground, but in its second year, it grows into a flowering stalk and disperses thousands of burr-encased seeds across the surrounding area. This reproductive strategy makes early intervention critical: addressing burdock before it flowers and sets seed is the most effective way to reduce its spread.
